Stress Management: Exercise, Meditation, and Relaxation
No matter where you turn, no matter what you do, there will be problems and
challenges you have to face head-on every day. You have to learn to manage the stress in your life to keep control.
And, the way to do that is to make changes that will improve your over-all health and well-being.
When you are overwhelmed with stress, you have negative thoughts and feelings about yourself and
that leads to low self-esteem. Instead of focusing on problems, focus on yourself. The problems won't disappear but
you will be able to cope with them.
To build your confidence, think about the things you do well. Think about the successes you have
had in your life, personally and on the job. When you accomplish a goal, reward yourself. When you build your
self-confidence, your stress management plan will be easier to develop. Take it a step-at-a time. When you feel
overwhelmed, take a deep breath and focus on the problem at hand. Put it into perspective with everything else
going on around you.
Meditation can help you build your self-confidence and lessen your stress. It helps you to calm
your mind, relax your body, and relieve the stress of the day. You can find a type of meditation that suits you through centers in your
community, books, and the Internet.
Relaxation techniques will also help you to relieve stress and cure insomnia. A simple exercise is to lie on the floor or on your bed,
progressively tighten, and then release the major muscle groups of the body. Start with your feet and end with your
head and neck. As you tighten and relax your muscles deeply and focus on positive thoughts. This technique takes
about 10 minutes.
When you stretch your muscles and joints, they contract and release easier. You can find relaxation
techniques in books and on the Internet. Some adult education centers also have classes in relaxation and
meditation techniques.
Focusing on yourself and the successes you have had will help you to start managing your
stress.
